Taller de cerámica
Pianca Arquitetura reuses an old industrial warehouse in São Paulo, Brazil, into a ceramics school, giving continuity to the urban character of the neighborhood, historically marked by workshops, small factories and industrial warehouses.

The project's starting point was the need to create a space in São Paulo entirely dedicated to teaching ceramics. Instead of adapting an existing workshop, the clients sought a warehouse that could be transformed into a school from the outset: with spacious studios, full of shelves, sinks, potter's wheels, worktables for slabs, and tables that would allow for different activities to take place simultaneously, as well as adequate infrastructure and good accessibility.

The chosen warehouse is located in Mooca, a neighborhood historically marked by workshops, small factories, and industrial sheds—features that still shape its urban character today. Relatively new and well-preserved, the building retained its original facade, roof, and service core, allowing the project to focus primarily on incorporating architectural elements with a strong visual and chromatic presence—pieces that now inhabit and occupy the warehouse's large void.

Among these new elements, a second internal facade stands out, three meters and twenty centimeters high, constructed of steel, blocks and metal profiles, which houses three large display cases for exhibiting pieces produced at the school.

The interior is organized around a sequence of square-profiled metal porticos, installed in a non-coplanar manner; the spaces between them are filled with lightweight nylon curtains and hammered aluminum panels, creating a vibrant landscape of materials. These porticos also house the plumbing system for the ceramics rooms' sinks.

Above the existing bathroom core, a mezzanine was created for the administrative area, accessed by a green metal Santos-Dumont staircase—another distinctive element that becomes part of the overall design. The lighting, designed to ensure comfort in its use as a school-workshop, consists of galvanized profiles with tubular lamps arranged throughout the space. At the rear of the lot, the exterior area features a shade-loving garden on a crushed stone surface, based on the landscape design by architect Claudia Bresciani.
